Designer's Workbench

Workbench with Flexible Workspace Height for designers to work continuously for long work hours with minimum stress and fatigue to brain and body

Design Objective

The Project was part of a group workshop titled “Solution to improve daily experience of designer’s workbench” as part of module during second semester of Bachelor Degree in Product Design. The project was continued forward and working 3d prototype was generated to understand motion in Fusion 360.

Problem Definition

Designer tend to work over a longer period of time on their workbenches generating considerable fatigue. Design a ergonomic workbench with flexible sitting and working height and customized storage and workspace to facilitate long term working environment without fatigue.

Design Concept

Retractable design following the principles of Pythagoras Theorem, the work bench was designed with two driving mechanism, one the linear X-linked scissor lift and another changing the acute angle of right angle triangle to change its height.

The Design Process

Easy Adjustable Working and sitting Height Design.
Ergonomic light for continuous working

The workflow followed a structured procedure involving analysis of a existing products, finding problems and then generating series of solution to find an enhanced experience with the product.

A detailed research was carried out by the team, employing both primary research – where in we carried out brain storming, interviews of students from our own university as well as visiting the esteemed National Institute of Design (NID). We also visited industrial design companies manufacturing work benches in Ahmadabad and secondary research by searching internet employing various search engines.

The research helped in identifying the problems in terms of inconvenience using the existing workbenches in our institutes and then formulating the design statement. We utilized various tools like generating persona boards, inspiration board leading to concept generation, followed by proto-typing and later utilizing the power of computer to render the proto-type as real product.

The concept virtual prototype design is based on the Pythagoras Theorem:  Changing the Base of right angled triangle changes the altitude proportionately, thus imparting adjustable height to workspace, the second prototype uses the simple scissor joint movement to achieve the similar height adjustment. The stress analysis of both the method reveal that the first design with simple push bar for height adjustment is more stable for the workbench.
